Inside North Korea

Under the pretense of following and documenting the medical procedures of an optometric surgeon performing much needed surgeries, pro bono, on over 1000 North Korean people in just a few days, whose diet and lack of proper medical care results in a staggeringly high rate of cataracts, a National Geographic team is able to capture the total cohesiveness and divine legitimization imposed by a tyrant leader. The film is called Inside North Korea.

North Korea builds grandiose ghost towns on its borders to display its wealth and strength to neighboring countries, but through its isolationist and bitter attitudes to any form of outside influence, subverts the idea of the people and any form of free thinking or criticism, and forces its people to suffer. Through a combination of legitimization, atomization, and force, Kim Jong-Il reigns as a god king while, publically, his people praise him for every good aspect of their life. In fact, every one of the over 1000 patients who had cataract surgery documented in Inside North Korea lifted their hands and gave shouting thanks and praise to a large wall print of their fearless leader after the completion of their operation.
